Walter R. Chipperfield, 91, passed into eternity Friday, October 7, 2016 at Wahoo, NE. Walter was born July 11, 1925 to Harold and Hattie Chipperfield in Portland, OR. In his youth, Walter attended “Mount Hope” rural school in Cheyenne Co, KS. In 1939 the family moved to the Big Timber community to farm. Walter graduated from Bird City High School in 1943.
During WWII, Walter volunteered to the US Navy. He was a Shipfitter, operating a crane, loading and unloading ships. Walter served in the Seabee’s, on the Admiralty Islands, Philippines and Guam.
Walter and Fannie Pettit were united in marriage May 8, 1949 in Benkelman, NE. In 1950 they chose to serve the Lord and were faithful to that choice all their lives. They spent many years on a ranch south of McDonald where they raised their four children. In 1983 they retired and moved to Atwood. After Fannie passed away, Walter moved to South Haven Living Center in Wahoo, NE in June 2015.
Walter excelled in farming and ranching. In his retirement days he enjoyed woodworking and spending time with children and grandchildren.
Preceding Walter in death were his wife, Fannie, parents, brothers, Clifford, Frank and Richard, niece and nephews.
Surviving Walter are his children, Lee and Dica, of Wahoo, NE, Stan and Helen of Gypsum, KS, Carol and Charles Campbell, Glenpool, OK, Dwight and Judith, Goodland KS; eight grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren; sisters in law, Dorothy Chipperfield and Yvonna Pettit; brother in law, Floyd Pettit, nephew, Lyle Chipperfield, and niece, DiAnn Vandergriff.
Visitation will be Monday, October 10, 2016 from 4 pm until 7 pm at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral service will be at Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at 2 pm, at the American Legion Hall-Bird City, KS. Burial will follow at the Benkelman Cemetery, Benkelman, NE. Memorial may be made to Walter R. Chipperfield Memorial Fund and may be sent in care to Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67701.
