Verna J. (Janzen) Wiens, 93, of Colby, died Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Citizens Medical Center in Colby. She was born August 5, 1922, in rural Texas County, OK to Barney and Agnus (Wiebe) Janzen. She was baptized on April 15, 1938, at the Mennonite Brethren Church and graduated from Adams High School in 1942.
Verna married George Wiens on October 7, 1943 in Texas County, OK. In March of 1947 George and Verna moved to Northwest Kansas. Later in in December of 1974, they moved to their own farm located on Hwy 25. During her lifetime, she saw great change in the methods of farming, from dryland to irrigation. Verna enjoyed her role of bookkeeping for W&W Farms, Inc. She was also involved in numerous community activities, clubs, and church activities.
Verna was very skilled at sewing, first for her daughters, dressing them alike with lots of ruffles and lace trimmed dresses. Later, her sewing skills were used for making quilts. Verna had an appreciation for all things beautiful. She had a large Hummel collection, loved her Fostoria, and enjoyed tending to her beautiful flower gardens. She also enjoyed spending time with her four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Verna was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother Walter Janzen.
She is survived by her daughters, Georgetta (Robert) Schoenfeld and Berna (Larry) Towns, both of Colby; siblings, Harold (Helen) Janzen, of Alva, OK, Chester (Marlece) Janzen, of Topeka, KS and Hilda Janzen, of Kolblenz, Germany; four grandchildren, Tracy (Terry) Johnson, Travis (Carrie) Towns, Jayson (Jen) Schoenfeld and Krista (Ryan) Carter; seven great-grandchildren, Taylor and Tanner Johnson, Jaysie, Jenson and Jera Schoenfeld and Kenzie and Ryler Carter.
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2016 at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2016 at the Colby United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Summers Township Cemetery.
