When He calls me I will answer. I will be somewhere listening for my name. The Angels came for our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Verla Weber early on the morning of July 24, 2014. Verla Elsie Lockard was born August 14, 1916 at the farm home of her parents in Dickinson County, Kansas near Elmo. She was the first child of the four children born to Roy Edison and Elsie Rhodes Lockard. Her education began at Superior Dist #19 School. Walking ½ to the on room school house where one teacher taught grades 1 thru 8. Her childhood was a happy one with family, church and school. As a family, they attended College Hill Presbyterian Church. She always felt fortunate to have been raised in a Christian home. Growing up on a farm there were always many chores to be done. But there was also time to lie in a hammock and watch beautiful sunsets, stars & rainbows. Every summer she got to take piano lessons. Hope Rural High School is where she attended four years. During some of those years she drove a Model A Ford 6 miles for classes. Verla graduated 80 years ago on May 22, 1934. On the first day of December 1939 she married the love of her life Glenn William Weber. The ceremony was at the home of her parents the house where she was born. They walked life’s pathway for nearly 68 years. Two daughters were born to this union, Merna Eilene and Vivian Joyce. The family lived at Carlton, Miltonvale and Smith Center before moving to Colby in August 1956. Verla was employed at the Chief Motel and Ramada Inn as head Housekeeper. Later employment was at Federal Crop Insurance in Colby. She loved to sew dresses for her girls in their younger years. Her flowers and vegetable garden were always beautifully kept. Many hours were spent doing embroidery work on tea towels, pillow-cases and pictures. All treasures to be cherished by her family. She also enjoyed reading daily devotions, books, magazines and newspapers. She also loved KS College football, basketball & KC Royals on television. Verla was a member of the Colby Presbyterian Church for 52 years. She once served as President of the Pres Women Association. She and Glenn enjoyed in their retirement years traveling to Hawaii & Canada on tours. They belonged to Golden Buckle Campers group. Several winters were spent in Yuma Arizona and McAllen, Texas. Verla enjoyed playing cards. She and Glenn belonged to several card clubs. Verla is preceded in death by her parents, husband Glenn 2007 and sister Marvel Myers. Loved ones who are left to keep her memory alive are daughters Merna Schroeder and Vivian Dewees. Grandchildren: Tamara, Stacy, Mark, Rick and Denise. Great grandchildren: Shane, Travis, Ethan, Larrissa, Tiara, Alexa, James, Jordan, R.J., Allison, Jessica and Samantha. Brother Truman Lockard Sister Nadine Russell and numerous other relatives. Verla has been on a long earthly journey. She has finished the work the Lord had planned for her. She needs a rest and is taking it. In a place where she has gone to stay. Her vacation will be in Heaven and her address in the Great Beyond.
