Trixie Carney

July 13, 1954 — June 2, 2024

Trixie Lu (Underhill) Carney, age 69, of Colby, Kansas passed away quietly at her home on June 2, 2024. Trixie was born July 13, 1954, in Eldorado, Kansas to Charles and Norma (Charles) Underhill.

Trixie and her family lived in Collyer, KS where she began her school years. She started school in first grade, as her grade school did not have kindergarten. In the middle of her second-grade year, Trixie and her family moved to WaKeeney, where they resided until the passing of her father, at the age of eleven. Growing up in WaKeeney was very memorable for Trixie. She and her six siblings were always busy hiking, playing baseball, and playing hide-and-seek with the neighbor kids. When Trixie finished her freshman year in high school, she and her family moved to Goodland, KS. While living in Goodland, she met Robert "Bob" Carney at the Goodland Skating Rink. Bob and Trixie married on October 2, 1971, and to this union was born three sons: Shawn, Jeffrey, and Bradley. Trixie graduated high school in 1972 from Sharon Springs High School, and later graduated from cosmetology school from Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland in 1973.

As a young family, Trixie and Bob moved to Colby, where she worked various jobs until she began her career of managing Coastal Mart convenience stores. Trixie was manager of the Colby C-Mart for 10 years, and then moved to St. Francis where she managed the St. Francis C-Mart for another 8 years. Managing C-Mart was where Trixie demonstrated her hard work ethics, which were passed down to her three sons. Trixie never knew a stranger, and managing the C-Mart stores gave her the outlet to create lots of life-long relationships not only with her employees but also customers. To this day, Trixie is still remembered around Colby by her “C-Mart days.” Trixie later moved to the Kansas City area, where she worked for Caremark as a Public Service Representative. Trixie continued her quest of making relationships even over the phone when working for Caremark. She made friends with clients as far as Arlington, Texas. Trixie retired in 2016 and moved back to Colby to be closer to her sons and their families. With Trixie not being a “sit around” type of gal, she began driving the Thomas County Transportation Van and did homecare until her own health prevented her from working.

Not only was Trixie a hard worker, but she was also very involved and dedicated to her sons’ activities when they were younger. She coached baseball, supported her boys in their swim leagues, and she was a Cub Scout leader. Trixie also enjoyed being part of a women’s bowling league in both Colby and St. Francis. In later years, Trixie enjoyed meeting with her weekly ladies coffee group, visiting with her neighbors and her sister Diana, crocheting, gardening, attending her grandchildren’s activities, and vacationing with her family. She continued getting to know people and making relationships, even when she was sick and in the hospital. Trixie made an impact and an impression in many people’s lives, even with her favorite doctor in Denver who would call Trixie on her birthday and Christmas just to check in with her to see how she was doing.

Trixie was preceded in death by her parents, brother Terry Underhill, and her sister Sally Buchholz. Trixie leaves to mourn her passing, her three sons: Shawn (Rhonda) of Culbertson, Nebraska; Jeffrey (Amanda) of Colby; and Bradley (Savannah) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; seven grandchildren: Brittany (Robert) Turpin of Culbertson, Nebraska; Alexis (Alexx) Uecker of Hastings, Nebraska; Calista and Danica Carney; Alixus and Makenzie Call; and Jack Carney; four siblings: David (Janet) Underhill of Mitchell, Nebraska; Diana (Dave) Bratts of Ozawkie, Kansas; Frank (Joan) Underhill of Palco, Kansas; and Keith (Carol) Underhill of Hill City, Kansas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
