“Buddy” Sherman Duane Van Horn, 66, of Colby, died February 16, 2015 at Citizens Medical Center. He was born September 2, 1948 in Colby to Sherman and Verleen (Backus) Van Horn. He married Linda Broeckelman on April 17, 1971 in Oakley, KS. Buddy had worked in the lumber business since the age of 16. He had managed lumber yards in Burlington, CO and Paso Robles, CA before returning to Colby. In 1983 he became the manager of Colby Lumber and retired in January of 2014. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby and was a Charter Member of Pheasants Forever and stayed a member for 33 years. He was a former board member for the Colby/Thomas County Chamber of Commerce and the Water Management Board. Buddy never knew a stranger. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also golfed and participated in the Buffalo Chip tournament every year. Buddy also had a tradition of going to “Friday night board meetings” with his friends. One of many highlights in Buddy’s life was winning the big lottery in 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard Van Horn; sister, Virginia Arnberger and niece, Shelli Troutman.
He is survived by his wife Linda; daughter, Malia (Shawn) Kirby; sister-in-laws, Kathy Kuntz, Margie Schoenfeld, Donna Gonzalez, Mary Ann Sahlfeld and Susan B. Taylor; brother-in-laws, Tom, Greg, Michael, Bob, Joe and Jim Broeckelman; fifty eight nieces and nephews and sixty two great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 2-6:00pm on Friday, Feb 20, 2015 at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Vigil service will be 7:00pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby. Funeral Mass will be 10:30am on Saturday, Feb 21, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Beulah Cemetery, Colby.
