Rose Marie Hand (88) of Atwood, KS was born to Emile Simoneau and Delia (Saindon) Simoneau in Sequin, KS on August 7, 1929. She died on July 22, 2018 in St. Anthony’s Hospital, in Lakewood, CO.
Rose was the 9th of 11 children. Her father worked as a Railroad Section foreman and moved his family across Nebraska and KS. She attended school in Beatrice, NE and graduated from high school in 1947. After high school, she moved to Wichita, KS to attend Vernon’s School of Cosmetology. She lived with her sister Lucille and her family. Once graduating and taking State Board exams, she relocated to Stockton, KS for her first job as a “Cosmetologist”.
Rose and her girlfriends would attend the local dances on the weekends and that is where she met Cloyce Hand… A handsome guy that could dance!!!! He swept her off her feet and they married on June 25, 1950. To this union they were blessed with 6 children. Cloyce had a job with Lane Wells and the new family transferred from Phillipsburg to ElDorado and then to Atwood. Rose worked hard raising her young children. She was always proud of how they looked and acted. She postponed her career as a beauty operator and was content practicing her skills on her 3 daughters and 3 sons, growing into a great mom. She raised all of their children in the Catholic faith and was very dedicated to it. She was in the Sacred Heart Altar Society, women’s groups, Clown Club and more. She was always involved in anything with CYO, CCD, choir…. from the 60s to just a few years ago. She loved all the kids she touched with her desire to help.
The growing family had a chance to relocate another time and decided Atwood was where they wanted to raise their kids. Cloyce changed jobs and their family settled in to a new neighborhood. Rose started working part time for Bertha Fikan’s salon until they were able to hang her own shingle “Rose’s Beauty Shop” on their home.
Once their older children started leaving home, they started filling the house with more children. Rose was a foster mother, had exchange students and multiple daycare children. She retired from her salon after 50yrs and continued watching children and did after school daycare up until 5yrs ago.
Rose lost her loving husband of 64yrs on 9-17-2014 and is happy to join him in Heaven.
She was preceded in death by husband Cloyce; her parents, Emile and Delia Simoneau; siblings, Lucille Stevens, Ulysses Simoneau, Cleo Simoneau, Edmund Simoneau, Margaret Bruckner, Alma Flemming, Eugene Simoneau and Dorothy Burch.
She is survived by her children, Steven Hand (Kathy), Steven’s Point, WI, Patti Davis (Gerald), Aurora, CO, Janeen Masters (Chuck), Andover, KS, Natalie Mickey (Darrell), McCook NE, Bill Hand (Dee), Hays, KS, Jerald Hand, Wichita, KS; brother Bill Simoneau, Aurora, CO; sister Adella Brouillette, North Platte, NE; 9 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and too many daycare children to count.
