Roger L. Hutfles, 76, of Atwood, died, Thursday, June 7, 2018, at his home. He was born November 17, 1941, to Frank and Mary (Unger) Hutfles, in Oberlin, KS.
His childhood was spent on the family farm, six miles south of Herndon, homesteaded by Grandpa Joseph Hutfles. Roger attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, grades first through eighth, and Herndon Rural High until his sophomore year. His parents sold their farm and moved to Atwood, where he attended Atwood Community High School and graduated with the class of 1959.
Roger was inducted into the Army in December of 1963 and completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. From there he went to Ft. Lee, VA. Then for 17 months he was stationed in Germany, near Frankfort, where he worked with armor. He was discharged (PFC-E3) December 9, 1965.
Returning to Atwood, Roger worked for the Rawlins County Road Department for 17 years. His hobbies were fishing and he became interested in antiques and collectibles. Before long he found himself “wheeling and dealing” in antiques. He was the proprietor of the “General Store”, located on Hwy 36. This was a hot spot for friends to gather and discuss the daily happenings. He met a lot of interesting people and found many treasures.
