Robert E. Mann, 91, of Atwood, passed away at the Rawlins County Hospital in Atwood on July 1, 2015. He was born July 3, 1923 to Cris and Blanche Mann in a farm home in Rawlins County. Bob attended kindergarten in Atwood, and then his family moved to a farm in Achilles, KS, where he attended grade school through the 8th grade. He then attended Atwood High School where he graduated in 1942.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army on August 9, 1944 at Fort Logan, CO. He received training at Camp Wolters, TX and sailed from Seattle, WA to the Philippine Islands in January, 1945. He served in Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Philippine Islands, Kerema Retto Islands, Okinawa and Japan during World War II. One November 1, 1946, he was discharged as a S/Sgt., Aircraft Engine Mechanic, having earned numerous overseas theatre decorations and citations. He returned to Atwood and became the manager of Palmer Paint and Glass Shop until he retired. Two sons were born to his marriage to Jo Ann Bowles; Larry Dean and Douglas Lynn. Both attended and graduated from the Atwood Schools.
Preceding him in death were his parents; former wife, JoAnn; sister, Ferne; brothers, Lyle and Junior and son, Douglas.
He is survived by his sisters, Enid Davis, Aurora, CO and Shirley Evans, Atwood; son, Larry, Hayward, WI and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will take place 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at the First Christian Church, Atwood, with Pastor David Todd officiating.
