Owen Lester Hardon was born December 15, 1927, on a farm southwest of Atwood, Kansas. His parents were Albert E. and Rosa (Bliss) Hardon. He passed into eternity on April 26, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Center in Atwood. He lived his life on the farm where he was born until health problems caused him to move to the Good Samaritan Center for his final days. He attended rural school, Hillside School District No. 94, and Atwood Community High School and graduated with the class of 1946. He received a State Farmers Degree in FFA and was a member of the National Honor Society.
In 1946, Owen became a member of the First Christian Church and was baptized by Rev. L. D. Oliphant. He served on many committees including the New Parsonage Building Committee and Educational Building Committee. He was a church elder for 26 years. He joined the Masonic Lodge in 1949 and was a member of the Masonic Foundation for Cancer Research. Owen was a member of the Atwood Equity Cooperative Exchange Board of Directors and functioned as Secretary of the Board for 38 years.
On March 21, 1950, he married Dorothy McLemore at the South Main Church of Christ in Roswell, New Mexico. To this union were born two sons, Gary and Glen. Owen, Dorothy and sons lived on the home farm and farmed with his parents, brother Albert Lee, and uncle Frank “Lester” Hardon. They had dairy cattle, raised Hereford cattle, fed cattle in a feed lot and had many other animals. They grew crops of wheat, milo and alfalfa, and raised much feed for the livestock.
Owen was preceded in death by his parents; his Uncle Lester; his brother Albert and sister-in-law Joaquina; and by his wife, Dorothy, who passed on August 27, 2013. He is survived by his sons, Gary and wife Susan of Wichita, Kansas and Glen and wife Peggy of McCook Lake, South Dakota; a special friend and helper Sherrie (Nelson) Trail of Atwood; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a nephew; two nieces, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church on May 6,2023, at 10:00 AM with interment at the Atwood Fairview Cemetery, Atwood, Kansas. Rev. David Todd officiating. Pallbearers: Kenny Bohme, Mike Braxmeier, Sam Crouse, Dan Fields, Paul Nelson, and Tom Trail. Honorary pallbearers: Don Holiman and Tim Rippe.
