Nina Omberg

November 29, 1919 — November 14, 2011

Nina Maude Omberg, 91, of Oakley, passed away on Monday, Nov. 14, 2011. She was born November 29, 1919, in Gardner N.D., to Victor and Maude McClannahan.
She married Wilmer Omberg on January 29, 1938. To this union, 5 daughters were born. While in their 30s, she and Wilmer gave their lives wholeheartedly to the Lord and to His work. They enjoyed doing ministry to the youth of their area, and would bring in so many kids for youth services that their car would be bursting at the seams. They became Pastors at Pinewood Chapel in Rochert MN, then pioneered a Church in Lake Park, MN, before moving to Oakley, KS in 1963, where they pastored at Oakley Community church (currently Fellowship Gateway Church) until their retirement in 1989.
Nina was known for her sweet, gracious, and loving spirit to friends and strangers alike. She was also known for her wonderful sense of humor. She loved to make up puns and tell jokes. Everyone’s favorites were her Olaf and Lena jokes, told with an impeccable Scandinavian accent. Together, she and Wilmer used to do a “Man About Town” sketch that would have people rolling with laughter. Nina was an amazing athlete and loved the game of baseball, playing on a semi-pro women’s team. She was a painter, and also had a beautiful singing voice. She, Wilmer, and their girls would make music together. In later years, she, Wilmer, and their daughter Cindy would take their vacations traveling around the country singing and ministering in churches.
She worked for the Oakley School District in the Lunchroom, both in Oakley and in Monument, for over 20 years, where the kids would come in and look forward to the “joke of the day”. After she retired from the school district, she worked as a hostess for Mitten truck stop for several years, until she retired for good at the age of 80.
Nina leaves behind 4 daughters, Joanne (Richard) Lindstrom, Sharyn (Stan) McDonald, Patricia (Don) Waterman, and Cindy (Jon) Hutchison, 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Victor McClannahan.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 73 years, Wilmer, daughter, Georgette who died in childbirth, grandson, Jon McKee Hutchison II, 6 sisters, and 1 brother.
Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov 18, 2011 at Gateway Fellowship Church, Oakley. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at the Gateway Fellowship Church, Oakley. There will be a private family burial in Oakley Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Church or American Diabetes Association in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 204, Oakley, KS 67748.
