Myrna L. Griffin, 87, departed this life, surrounded by loved ones, on Monday, January 13, 2025, in Tyler, TX. Myrna was born on July 22, 1937, in Brownington, MO, to Philip and Lucille Cummins Metzler. Myrna was the youngest of five children and grew up with a strong appreciation for family and community.
When Myrna was just a baby, her family moved to Colby, KS. She attended Colby Public Schools. On January 24, 1953, Myrna married the love of her life, Fred Griffin, in Colby, KS. Together they raised four daughters and built a home filled with love and cherished memories. Their marriage of 49 years, before Fred’s passing, was a testament to their unwavering commitment, shared joys, and mutual respect.
Myrna helped Fred in their neighborhood grocery store until the opportunity arose for her to fulfill her dream of being a hairdresser. She operated Colby Beauty Center until a proposal to sell beauty supplies piqued her interest. She loved traveling to other salons in the area. Myrna and Kathleen opened Kat’s Kraft Kottage where Myrna shared her love of crafts with the area. Myrna left her job to care for Fred’s parents. They moved them to the hog farm, where she and Fred could care for them and keep farming.
After Fred’s passing, Myrna moved back to town. When Myrna heard Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell, she was compelled, out of love for his music, to pursue another dream. She moved to Branson, MO, where she was an usher for Daniel, as well as numerous other entertainers. When her legs and back would no longer allow her to work as an usher, she moved to Colorado to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Wesley, and later to Texas, where she lived at the time of her death.
In her spare time Myrna enjoyed square dancing with Fred, knitting, reading, eating ice cream, putting together jigsaw puzzles, playing games and cards with friends and family, babysitting, gardening, bird watching, traveling, especially to the beach, caring for her fur babies, and following the grandkids in their different activities and sports. Family was everything to her, filling their lives with her unconditional love and guidance. Her kindness and generosity touched the lives of everyone she met. Including baking cinnamon rolls and making candies for friends and family and the littles that she volunteered to care for. Myrna’s legacy is woven into the memories of many who knew her and her presence will be deeply missed.
Myrna was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fred, son Terrance, an infant brother, brothers Leo D. Metzler, Sam E. Metzler, Merle E. Metzler, P. Homer Metzler, three grandchildren, Michael Scott Hopson, Melissa Sue Vagher, and Jason Chase Wilcox.
She is survived by four daughters, Kathleen (Wesley) Hopson, Cyd (Joe) Vagher, Diana (Kenneth) Wilcox, and Deanna (Doug) Horinek, 12 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, two sisters-in-law, Opal Linville and Helen Metzler, and a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Monday, January 20, 2025, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby, followed by burial at Beulah Cemetery, Colby.
