Mildred Thummel

Mildred Bernadine (Huelsmann) Thummel, 94, died Sunday morning at her home in Grinnell, Kansas. She was born March 22, 1918, in rural Angelus, Kansas to Henry & Mary Louise (Baalmann) Huelsmann.
She worked outside the home before marrying Lawrence Anthony Thummel on Aug 16, 1939 at St Paul Catholic Church, Angelus, KS. They made their home on a farm south of Sequin, KS and to this union 8 children were born.

Mildred enjoyed gardening, canning, and over the years became an excellent seamstress and cook for their growing family. She loved games and especially playing cards; however her true passion was her family. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, St Mary’s Altar Society of Grinnell & past member of the St. Martin Church and St Ann’s Sodality of Sequin.

Mildred is survived by five sons, Leon and wife Carol of Wichita, Bernard and wife Sharon of Hoxie, Larry and wife Marilyn of Grainfield, Mike and wife Mary Lou of Wichita, and Jon and wife Janice of Hoxie; two daughters, Charlotte Wolf and husband Dean of Grinnell and Jane McDougal and husband John of Colby; four brothers, Edwin and Bernard both of Oakley, Aloysius of Wichita and Charles of Grinnell; three sisters., Luetta Robben of Dodge City, and Donna Marie Smith of Wichita and Donna Lee McGuire of Oakley; twenty-nine grandchildren, fifty-seven great grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; son, Gerald; two brothers, Frank and John Huelsmann and two sisters Loyola Moos and Floralee Rumback.

Visitation will be from 6 - 8:00 pm, vigil/rosary at 7:00 pm, Thursday, December 6, at Immaculate Conception Parish Center, Grinnell. Funeral Mass will be Friday, December 7, at 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church, Grinnell and burial will follow at St. Martins Cemetery, Sequin. Luncheon will follow at Immaculate Conception Church Center, Grinnell. Memorials are suggested to Mildred Thummel Memorial Fund in care of Baalmann Mortuary PO Box 204, Oakley, KS 67748.
