Maxine Fay Phelps, 90, of Atwood, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at the Rawlins County Health Center, in Atwood, KS. She was the daughter of Henry and Zella (Davis) Fikan born December 26, 1927, at the family farmhouse southeast of Atwood. Maxine attended Union Township Grade School and graduated from Atwood High School in 1945. She then attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS for one and a half years and then returned to Atwood. On June 3, 1948, Maxine married Donald Phelps in Atwood. They were blessed with three children, Gary, Brent, and Donna. Maxine was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and active in many aspects of the church. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several card clubs as well as other women's organizations. Maxine particularly enjoyed family gatherings with immediate and extended family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Phelps; parents, Henry and Zella Fikan; sister, Darlene Fikan; and son-in-law, Doug Finley.
Maxine is survived by her children, Gary Phelps of Las Vegas, NV, Brent (Donna) Phelps of Houston, TX, and Donna Finley of Colby, KS; grandchildren, Justin (Marcella) Phelps, Sherry Phelps (Roy) Ramphal, Kristine Phelps (Ben) Figard, Mark Phelps, Christopher (Katrina) Finley, and Cole Finley; and 4 great- grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 4, 2018 at the Atwood United Methodist Church with inurnment to follow in the Fairview Cemetery.
