Mary Jo Youngblood, 91, of Atwood, died Friday, July 4, 2014 at her home. She was born August 19, 1922 to Ray A. and Gertrude (Brown) Cox on a farm in Graham County South of Hill City. In 1928 the family moved to Rawlins County from Graham County. In January her father Ray was struck by a truck and killed. The family then moved to Atwood where Gertie began the task of being both bread-winner and mother to all five children. Mary Jo graduated from Atwood high school in 1940. She then went on to attend Kansas University for three and a half years. Her beloved husband J.C. Youngblood returned from war and they were married on February 10, 1946. This union was blessed by the addition of two adopted children, Joseph Charles, Jr. and Jane Susan. J.C. and Mary Jo were engaged in running the Ford dealership Youngblood Motor Co. and farming. Mary Jo was a dedicated worker at the Rawlins County Hospital in Medical Records for twenty years before retiring in 2011. She was also very involved in her church and community playing for numerous weddings and funerals.
She is preceded in death by her husband, J. C.; her parents; a sister, Dorothy and brother Marvin.
She is survived by he children, Joseph (Susie) Youngblood Jr. and Jane (Michael) Griffith; grandchildren, Kara Wicke, Garth and Clayton Griffith, Angela Hienke, Gary (Trish) Taylor and eight great-grandchildren; also by many other family members and friends.
Cremation was chosen and a memorial services will be 10:30am, Monday, July 14, 2014 at the United Methodist Church, Atwood. Memorials are suggested to the Church or Rawlins County Health Center in care of Baalmann Mortuary, 109 N 2nd, Atwood KS 67730. Online condolences: www.baalmannmortuary.com
