Margaret “Micki” Sweeney, 77, of Russell, died Friday, January 29, 2021. She was born January 14, 1944, in Hays, KS, to Ben and Hilda (Ostmeyer) Mense. Micki graduated with the class of 1961 from Grinnell High School. On June 3, 1961, Micki married Jay Sweeney. To this union, three children were born. Micki and Jay worked together their whole married life, as owner/operators of the Quinter Livestock Commission and Russell Livestock Commission. Micki, in her free-time, enjoyed music, travel, shopping, and playing bridge and cards with her friends and family. She loved spending time with people who were dear to her, especially her grandchildren.
Micki was preceded in death by her parents and husband Jay.
She is survived by her children, Shelby (David) Hubert, Oakley, KS, Stephani Tipton, Austin, TX, and James (Sarah Knoll) Sweeney, Burien, WA; brothers, Don (Florence) Mense, Hoxie, KS, Tom (Karen) Mense, Grinnell, KS and Steve (Vicky) Mense, Asbury, MO; grandchildren, Whitney (Jeffrey) Dennis, Lindsey (John) Behrendt, Hannah Hubert (Olivia Moore), Christopher Tipton (Kasey Hahn), Taylor Sweeney (Madison Grigsby), Austin Sweeney and Ira Williams and great-grandchildren Vada, Sutton, and Hayes Dennis.
The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 4, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Russell, KS, with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m. Friday, also at the church. A graveside service will take place at the Oakley City Cemetery at 3:00 followed by appetizers and fellowship at the Oakley Country Club. We understand that many will be with us in spirit rather than in person due to the risk of COVID. Facemasks and social distancing are required.
