Lynn Hagler

Lynn Dale Hagler, age 80, died at his home in Colby, Kansas with his children at his side on Monday, April 1, 2013. He was born on May 15, 1932 at Chardon, Kansas to John Albert Hagler and Zillah Letitia (Winter) Hagler. He was the fourth of five children. He had two brothers, Roland (deceased) and Ross, and two sisters, Twila Roesch (deceased) and Ferma Nissen. He attended country school in Rawlins County and graduated from Colby High School. He met his one true love, Helen Talbott, at a square dance in Colby, Kansas. They knew their first dance was going to be for a lifetime and were married on November 16, 1952. Shortly after their marriage, on December 9, 1952 Lynn was drafted into the army and was stationed in Korea. He was a sergeant in the Korean War in the Company A, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division. He returned home to his bride in 1954 and was ready to begin his life with her for the next 59 years! Two years later they were blessed with their first child and only son, Harlan D. Hagler. For a short time after Harlan was born they had moved to Colorado Springs where Lynn worked for Meadow Gold Milk. In 1957, they moved back to the family farm southwest of Atwood after his parents had retired from farming and moved into Colby. In 1959 they were blessed again with their only daughter, Sherry L. Ummel. Lynn loved the farm and all the hard work that went with it. At one point in his farming career, he raised turkeys---thousands at a time! For many years (after the turkeys), he had the patience to raise hogs. He was always busy on the farm. Even in the winter when the field work would slow down, he could be found in his shop tinkering on some kind of project. He would always find something to do on the farm and could easily figure out the mechanics of how things worked—if it didn’t work, he could fix it! In 1980 Lynn and Helen moved from the family farm to Mingo, Kansas and then later relocated to their present home in Colby, Kansas. Lynn was still active in farming after his son took over the farm, but when the cold months came along, he and Helen would head south to Texas where he could take in some great fishing. They enjoyed spending those few months down south where they made many new friends and Lynn would come home with some great fishing stories to share with his family and coffee shop friends. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and knew that God had truly blessed him with his family and the life he had. Lynn was a member of the Berean Church, serving on the board and was treasurer for many years. He belonged to Gideon’s International and was a member of V.F.W.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his parents, John and Zillah Hagler, his sister, Twila (Hagler) Roesch and brother Roland.

He is survived by his brother, Ross Hagler of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, sister, Ferma Nissen of Lakewood Colorado; his two children, Harlan D. Hagler and wife, Margaret Hagler; Sherry L. Ummel and husband, Larry Ummel; grandchildren, Morgan Schweizer and husband, Bryan of Atwood, Kansas; Jacob Hagler and wife, Linde of Atwood, Kansas; Jordan Hagler of Atwood, Kansas; Erica Wang and husband, Sam, of Golden, Colorado; Adam Horinek of Dodge City, Kansas and fiancé Megan Stefan; and three great-grandchildren, Addison Schweizer, Emma Hagler and Bentley Hagler, all of Atwood.
