He grew up on his parent’s farm, 10 miles north of town. He lived and worked on that farmstead until age and declining health prompted a move to Oakley in 2007. Wight was deployed to France and Germany as a Second Lieutenant in the Army of Occupation where he served until the end of World War II. In 1945 he married his high school sweetheart, Lillian Irene Rhea. They made their home on the Sims family farm where they worked, gardened and raised their children. Wight was active in the United Methodist Church of Oakley, served on the Oakley School Board, and the Mingo Co-op board. As a founding member of the Oakley VFW post #2981 Wight was dedicated to VFW service, receiving recognition for 70 years of service in 2019.
Always a builder and creator, Wight’s farmyard was a welcoming venue for memorable occasions hosted by Wight and Lillian for family, Methodist Church groups and friends.
