Leroy Francis Zerr, 57, a lifelong resident of rural Grinnell, died on January 20, 2016 in Oakley. He was born March 25, 1958, in Oakley KS, to Clem and Pauline (Pfeifer) Zerr. Leroy graduated from Wheatland High School in 1976 and from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1980. Agriculture was Leroy’s livelihood as well as his hobby. He was the happiest when he had a tool in his hand and his head stuck under the hood of a car, tractor, combine, etc. He enjoyed a challenge and took on many in his lifetime. Even though he never had any children of his own, he always enjoyed all his nieces and nephews with his teasing and having them follow him around the farm.
Leroy was a bachelor who farmed alongside his parents and brother Donald, until going out on his own. He took good care of his parents while they lived on the farm. He purchased his own farmstead in 1985, 2 miles east of the farm he was raised on. Leroy worked with Donald doing contract work for others; including demolition of buildings, manure hauling/spreading and silage hauling. He will be missed by the many people who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clem; brother, David, infant brother Duane and nephew Marvin Miller.
He is survived by his mother, Pauline, of Oakley; siblings, Donald Zerr, of Grinnell, Geraldine Zerr, of Hays, Marietta (Tom) Plummer, of Oakley, Ruth (Donnie) Miller, of Dighton, Ella Dankenbring, of Kearney, NE, Duane Zerr, of Pittsburg and Elaine (Dale) Jones, of Council Grove; Nieces, Sarah Zerr, of Philadelphia, PA, Jennifer (John) Tillman, of Assaria, LeAnn (Lance) Harter, of Kearney, NE, Kaitlyn, Hannah & Lydia Zerr, of Pittsburg, Melinda (Scott) Kincaid, of Shawnee, Nicole Jones, of Council Grove; Nephews, Travis Plummer, of Hays, Lucas (Kami) Miller, of Amy, Jason (Suzanne )Schielke, of Colby, Justin (Amanda) Schielke of Valley Falls, Christopher Rohr, of Pittsburg, Preston Zerr of Pittsburg, Christopher Jones of Topeka, 19 great-nieces and nephews, many uncles and aunts and numerous Zerr and Pfeifer cousins.
Visitation will be 5-8:00pm, Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at Immaculate Conception Parish Center, Grinnell, a Vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2016, 10:00am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Grinnell with interment following in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Grinnell.
