Leo John Muehlenkamp, 78, of Grinnell, died Saturday, May 13, 2017. He was born December 18, 1938, to Ben and Katherina (Mense) Muehlenkamp, in rural Logan County, Oakley, KS. As a teenager, he went to work for Ben and Rosena Hemmert on their farm south of Angelus, and remained there the rest of his life. He was a member of the St. Pauls Catholic Church in Angelus.
Leo enjoyed farming and caring for his livestock. He was the "St. Francis" for the wildlife that shared his land. He carried his camera with him a lot and as a result, he has some unique pictures of God’s creatures and creations. Leo was a kind and caring person and always ready to lend a helping hand to others. He enjoyed all of his nieces and nephews and spending time with family. He was awesome.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; brother Fred; sisters, Marceline, Frances, Rosena Hemmert and Bernardine Ladenburger and nephew Leland Arthur.
He is survived by his brothers, Bernard Muehlenkamp, Oakley and Lawrence (Margaret) Muehlenkamp, Oakley; sisters, Mary Gibson, Hutchinson, KS, Agnes Krause, Westminster, CO, Marjorie (Dar) Brown, Troy, MI and Verna Wright, Oakley; nephews, Mike Gibson, Miles Ladenburger, Jim Muehlenkamp, Jerry Ladenburger, Jeff Ladenburger, David Ladenburger, Steven Arthur and Craig Brown; nieces, Linda Plummer, Christy Watson, Debbie Meschke, Diane Young, Bernadette Novotny, Theresa Fox, Tina Stucky, Carla Nickels, Marla Thompson and Kristen Higginbotham and sereral great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Cremation was chosen. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley, with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2017 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, in Angelus, with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, Oakley, at 1:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Services or St. Jude’s, in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 204, Oakley, KS 67748.
