Leo Micek

Leo Anthony Micek, 76, of Atwood, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2016 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE. He was born December 9, 1939 to Timothy and Mary (Faimon) Micek and grew up on the family farm 15 miles northwest of Atwood, KS. Leo grew up with an appreciation for hard work, faith in God, and unwavering determination. In his youth, he attended Czech Center country school before enrolling at St. Joseph’s Military Academy in Hays, KS where he graduated with honors. Leo was always proud of his education. Following high school, he obtained a BA degree from Creighton University in Omaha and a Masters in Psychology from the University of Nebraska. Leo answered the call to military service and enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years during the Vietnam War after which he was honorably discharged.

During his working years, Leo was diversified. He began work for the Fort Logan Mental Health Center in Denver, CO where he worked for 4 years after which he was employed by the State of Colorado as a mental health and rehab professional. After years of employment with the State of Colorado, Leo went on to work for Martin Marietta Company and eventually took a different direction as an oil and gas landman in the Rocky Mountain area. Leo finally returned home to care for his aging mother.

Leo loved reading and learning. He had a deep faith and found joy in his relationships with close friends. Leo was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus, and American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tim and Mary Micek and brothers, Jerome and Alfred.

Leo is survived by his sister-in-law, Jean Micek of Colby; nieces, Zita Mead and husband Sherman, Rose Schacher, Jeanette Fortkamp and husband Mike; nephews, Tim Micek and wife Debra, Tom Micek and wife Chandra; grandnieces and nephews and many cousins and friends.

Visitation is 4-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood, with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood with burial to follow in Sts. Cyril & Methodius Cemetery, Rawlins County, KS. Memorials can be made to the cemetery, in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67701. Condolences or information: www.baalmannmortuary.com
