Larry Kent Fikan, 76, of Atwood, passed away Monday, February 6, 2017 at the Atwood Good Samaritan Home. He was the eldest child of Reno and Eileen (Kyte) Fikan and was born on October 2, 1940, at the home of his grandparents, southeast of Atwood.
Larry grew up on the family farm southeast of McDonald, KS. He attended Lone Prairie School #226 and then McDonald high School. He graduated from Atwood Community High School in 1962.
Larry held several different jobs, from doing farm work and harvesting for his Dad and Grandpa, to building bridges, going with the Dal Fields harvest crew and drilling water wells with Dale Wilcox. He found his niche working as a dispatcher for the Rawlins County Sheriff’s Office for 34 years.
When he retired from the dispatch office, he became involved with the Tri-State Engine and threshers Association of Bird City. He enjoyed helping repair threshers and restoring some of the tractors, as well as refurbishing several of his own and a small combine. He was always excited about helping prepare for the big Thresher Show every year.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and brother Lyle D. Fikan.
He is survived by his sister Lois M. (Ken) Smith, of Atwood; nephews, Luke (Shannon Pettijohn) Smith, of rural McDonald and Jason (Amber) Smith, of Colby; great nephews, Isaac Smith and Jeffry Smith; great nieces, Ashlyn Smith and Shayna Pettijohn; sister-in-law, Janet Fikan, of El Reno, OK and many other relative and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2017, at the First Christian Church, in Atwood. There will be a private inurnment. Memorials may be made to the Tri-State engine and Threshers Association or the First Christian Church.
