Larry E. Barrett was born February 15, 1942 in Cape Girardeau, MO to Elbert and Mildred (Clardy) Barrett. He died July 4, 2016 at his Colby home. He grew up in Colorado where he learned to love skiing and fly fishing. He graduated from Boulder High, attended the University of Colorado, and graduated from Western State College in Gunnison. He married Sarah Jane (Munday) of Colby in June of 1963 and recently celebrated 53 years of marriage. Their children are Barbara Jean Niles of Tucson, AZ and Bonnie Kay Corrigan (Troy) of Bellvue, CO.
He taught high school in Delta, CO before going to work for Elba Corporation in Denver where he worked until 1974. Afterward, he moved to Colby where he bought Colby Savings and Loan which he owned and operated as Sunflower Savings until 1984. Next, he supported Peachtree Accounting Software for many years. He also farmed in Thomas County.
Each day when Larry woke up, he decided to be happy and to have a good day. His kind and optimistic personality will be missed by everyone who knew him. Larry loved the game of golf and formed many wonderful friendships through his association with the sport. He particularly looked forward to his annual golf trip to Arizona with some of his buddies. He was active in many organizations including, but not limited to, the Kansas Golf Association, United States Golf Association, formation of Citizen’s Medical Center, Farm Credit Association, Rotary, Board of Zoning Appeals of the City of Colby, member of the Colby United Methodist Church, and was a lifetime member of the Thomas County Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife, children, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Evonne Phillips, and his brother George Barrett.
Visitation will be from 4 7 pm on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Baalmann Mortuary in Colby, KS. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Colby United Methodist Church.
