La Rue Horinek

La Rue May (Fikan) Horinek, long-time resident of the Atwood community, died June 5, 2017, at her home.

She was born July 5, 1936 to Wilhem H. and Mary (Ryba) Fikan at the family homestead in Atwood, KS, delivered by a neighbor, midwife Anna Matisek.

She attended Hawkeye Country School through 7th grade and then graduated from Atwood High School in 1954. She attended college at K-State, majoring in merchandising, for two and one half years. She lived in Wake Forest, NC, until her move in 1967 back to the family farm with her son Garth (born in 1961).

La Rue kept busy on the family farm as well as being employed at several local businesses: the Citizen-Patriot newspaper, Rawlins County District Court, and Atwood Abstract.

In 1979 she married Lee Roy J. Horinek. With this union her family grew to include four step-children, Deborah, Doug, Dianne and David.

In the early 1980’s she became involved with her husband’s hobby of making items out of Pewter. For over thirty years it was known as Kansas Brass and Pewter. They made a variety of items that included picture frames, jewelry, and novelty items. For twenty five years La Rue and employee Dennis Haun created Pewter Christmas Ornaments that were collected by many people.

La Rue loved her family and friends and will be sorely missed. She and her husband Lee Roy enjoyed traveling many places with Lee Roy’s daughter, Deb and husband, Al. She was a gifted craftsperson and did knitting, crocheting and quilting. She was also a member of the Atwood Rebekah Lodge for over forty years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Marlyn June; brother Lyonald John; husband Lee Roy; sister-in-law Doretta Horinek-Sappenfield and step-daughter Deb Kompus.
