Kirk Elroy Coulter, 72, of Colby, passed away Tuesday, September 12th, 2023. He was born May 4th, 1951, in Oberlin, Kansas to Elvin and Wanda (Bretz) Coulter. He graduated from Hoxie High School in 1969, and on March 24th, 1972, Kirk married LuEllen Fuchs. The couple moved to Claflin for a short while before settling down in Colby where Kirk began his career at the Kansas State Department of Transportation. As the family grew, so did the hours spent on the road for rodeos and in the practice arena. If Kirk wasn’t at his office, the arena was his second home. After years of hard work and dedication, he retired as State Supervisor. He then transitioned into a full time, team roping grandpa – with responsibilities such as running the chute, teaching the grandkids, and keeping up with chores and the garden. “Tinkering” became his and Lu’s past time.
He was preceded in death by both parents and sister, Sandra Coulter.
He is survived by his wife, LuEllen, of Colby and children, Lea (Chris) Kaiser, of Park, KS and Reagan (Katie) Coulter, of Colby. His grandchildren include Tacey, Dylan & Kaden Kaiser as well as Randon, Ryatt, Rynslee & Ridge Coulter. He is also survived by his brother Kerry (Kim) Coulter, Topeka, KS.
