Joseph Daniel Green was born December 10, 1937, on the family farm north of Herndon, the youngest of six children born to Bernard H. and Elizabeth (Unger) Green. Joe passed away February 19, 2025, at Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska, surrounded by his wife, Nadine and five children, Connie, Dave, Jeanne, Patti and Debbie.
Joe attended St. Mary's Catholic School for eight years and Herndon High School for four years graduating in 1956. He enlisted in the Army in June of 1956, was stationed in El Paso, Texas and was honorably discharged on July 1, 1958. Upon returning to Herndon, he worked at Kump Motor Company in Oberlin. In 1959 he went to auction school in Mason City, Iowa then went to work at the Atwood Sale Barn and later to a sale barn in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Joe returned to Herndon and married the love of his life, Nadine Riener on May 19, 1962. They began their life together at a small farmhouse west of Herndon before moving their house to the family farm north of Herndon in 1963. In addition to farming and ranching, Joe enjoyed his work as an auctioneer and real estate agent for Johnson Realty until 2020. Just for fun, he restored many John Deere tractors including his dad’s 1937 John Deere D. His love for his family was obvious in the many good times shared at family gatherings. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren were especially precious to him.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard H. and Elizabeth Green (Ed) Solko; his brothers, John (Helen) Green, Bernard P. Green, and Leo J. Green and sister Marcelline (Raymond) Zwickl.
Joe is survived by his wife Nadine; five children, Connie (Jerry) Reitcheck of Conway Springs, Dave Green of Herndon, Jeanne (Marty Ruda) Tuma of Colby, Patti (Robert) Chartier of Ozawkie, and Debbie (Dave) Unger of Herndon; sister Sr. Cecilia Green of the Motherhouse, Concordia; sister-in-law Marianna Green Thomas of Oakley; six grandchildren Mitchell (Kelsey Middleton) Tuma, Brittany Tuma, Jeff (Ashley Pica) Ruda, Kylie (Kyle) Bruce, Baron Green and Emma Green; eight great grandchildren, Reata Tuma, Pate Tuma, Kaley Phelps, Kinlee Middleton, Jaxon Middleton, Bennett Bruce, Brett Bruce and Blake Bruce, as well as many extended family members and lifelong friends and neighbors.
A Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m., with the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 24, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Herndon, with burial in the church cemetery.
