Joseph William “Joe” Cabrinha was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, November 29, 1938. He was the oldest son of Joseph and Juliette Cabrinha. He was called to the Throne of his Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 14, 2013.
Joe was raised in Honolulu with his younger brother, Thomas. He often talked of his fond memories of surfing, playing baseball and sharing the many ethnic foods of Hawaii with his friends.
His education included the St. Louis School, Honolulu, HI, The Citadel, Charleston, SC and Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN.
After graduating from The Citadel in 1960, Joe returned to Honolulu, where he met and married Peggy Chessmore in 1961. Their family was made complete with the addition of three sons; David, Damien and Greg. During Joe’s 22 year career in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, he served in Heilbronn, Germany, Detroit, MI, Kitzingen, Germany, Ft. Campbell, KY, Ft. Belvoir, VA and two tours in Vietnam. Joe retired in 1983 and they moved to Honolulu, where he and Peggy worked until both retired in 1998, when they moved to Atwood.
Joe embraced Atwood as his home and sincerely cared about its future. He was involved in the work of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church through his participation on several committees and his guidance in beginning a weekly Adult Bible Study Class. He was a member of the City Council for 12 years and served as Atwood City Mayor for 2 ½ years.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years; sons, David, Damien and Greg and wife, Gina; grandson, Joseph; brother, Thomas and wife Pat and many friends.
Visitation will be 4-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Vigil Service is at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood with burial to follow at Atwood Fairview Cemetery.
