John Steiger

Jack Steiger, at the age of 78, unexpectedly passed from this life, into the next, on Friday, May 26, 2017, at the Hays Medical Center. Born January 10, 1939, he grew up on a farm southwest of Menlo, KS, where he was raised to adulthood, by his grandparents, John and Viola Steiger. He married Leoma Duffey, a dearly loved classmate, and together they had five children.

Jack graduated from Menlo Consolidated High School and attained his Bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University. A lifelong passion of teaching, coaching and officiating high school sports spanned nearly fifty years. Working with his fellow teachers, he was instrumental in helping shape the lives of innumerable young people. Due to the length of his teaching career, he often taught children of former students.

Jack was also a part time farmer and very attached to the land, which was homesteaded in the 1800’s by his great grandfather, Jacob Steiger.

Jack’s second birth took place when he accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized into the Family of God, on February 17, 1974. He later became a member of the Oakley Christian Church.

His youngest daughter, “Sherri”, made her journey “home” on January 7, 2000 and great granddaughter Addison Nickols on June 12, 2008.

His family left to continue their journeys are his children, Vicki (Tom) Nickols, of Colby, KS, Terri (Doug) Lupo, of Black Hawk, CO, John (Becky) Steiger, of Abilene, KS and J.J. (Dana) Steiger, of Menlo, KS; soulmate, Leoma Steiger, of Oakley, KS; as well as four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A gathering to celebrate Jack's life, for all friends, neighbors and family who would like to attend, will be held from 7-10:00 p.m. Thursday, June 15, 2017, at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. A graveside inurnment service with Pastor Jay Whyte, officiating will be held 10:00am, Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Menlo Cemetery, where Jack will be laid to rest among his loved ones. Again, friends, neighbors and family are invited to attend. In his honor, a memorial has been established to the Science department at Oakley High School and may be sent in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 204, Oakley, KS 67748, or given to any family member.
