John Harvey McGuire, 81, of Oakley, was born in a sod house in rural Logan County, Kansas to John Lloyd and Mabell Ruby (Trowbridge) McGuire on October 22, 1936. He finished his earthly journey July 21, 2018 in Oakley, KS.
He started school in District #3 and graduated from Oakley High School in 1954. Harvey was a lifetime learner and teacher with a vast array of interests. He tried to teach a number of us how to tie the cowboy crosses and crack his faded bullwhip. His storytelling just drew a person in, wanting more.
During his lifetime he held many interesting jobs. Just a few of his jobs include: airplane mechanic-pilot of the Red Baron tri-plane, stagecoach driver, dude ranch wrangler, mountain trail guide, cook, electrician, the list could go on. He made the most of each 24 hours he was given. His hobbies, like his jobs, were many and varied: jewelry making, poetry, music, cooking, gardening, DIY projects, playing the bones and being our little Irish leprechaun on St. Patrick's Day. His proudest and greatest accomplishments were 8 years of sobriety and knowing the Lord.
His knowledge, wit, humor, and storytelling will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers, Earl, Tom, Cliff, Glenn, Leland, Melvin, Cecil, and Bill; sister Pat Rose; brother-in-law Clarence Turley; sisters-in-law, Eula Ganger, Frances Blanche, Ruby, Viola, Bernice and Joy McGuire; an infant grandchild; four nephews; two nieces; four grandnephews and two great grandnieces.
