John Frederick Fikan, 53, of Colby, died Saturday, December 29, 2012 after a long struggle with cancer. He was born April 16, 1959, in Atwood, to Darrel and Bertha (Ankle) Fikan. He was definitely born to farm; he was the fourth generation to farm the family land in Kansas and craved that independent lifestyle. He married Karen Luedders on Dec. 2, 1983. He also loved to travel, and when time permitted and the weather cooperated he would often steal away the family for a spontaneous trip. He passed to his children his great love for the land and a deep respect for Mother Nature’s ways. When asked he was proud to serve on the board of directors of the Hi-Plains Cooperative in Colby for eight years, from 1985-1993.
Survived by his wife of 29 years, Karen; parents, Darrel and Bertha Fikan; daughter, Alicia (Jason) Siruta, Colby; two sons, Bradley (Shannon) Fikan, Colby and Jason Fikan, Atwood; brother, Robert (Karen) Harrington, Ft. Collins, CO; sister, Roberta (Al) Castanada, Gilbert, AZ; seven grant children, Ashley, Callie, Jaden, Taden, Ella, Emery and Brasen.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be 1:30 pm, Monday, Dec. 31, 2012 at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Burial will follow in Chardon Cemetery, near his childhood home. The family would like to sincerely thank the entire Hospice organization for the wonderful care given to John and in lieu of flowers, suggest donations to Hospice Services, Inc in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby KS, 67701.
