JB Cox, 95, of Atwood, died Sunday, March 21, 2021. He was born Sept. 6, 1925, to Ray Ardel and Mary Gertrude (Brown) Cox, in Hill City, KS. He was the fourth of five children, Marvin, Ada Fae (Jerry Bell), Mary Jo (JC Youngblood), and Dorothy (Jack Knudson). They all preceded him in death.
JB spent his early childhood on a farm south of Atwood. He stayed with his grandparents after his father was killed in an accident, and attended country school there. While spending time with cousins in the area, JB developed a love of horses and that passion stayed with him all his life. He finished grade school and then high school in Atwood. During WWII, JB joined the US Navy. When the war was over, he returned to Atwood. He married Ada Lee Bowles on Aug. 10, 1947. They had three children, Cindy, Craig, and Joe. Ada Lee passed away in 2015 and Joe in 2016.
JB was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sam Hubbard Post of American Legion, Masonic Lodge, and Eastern Star, all of Atwood. He served on many boards throughout his life. He always said he was appointed to so many boards because his name was easy to spell. He enjoyed helping with the many 4H activities in the county.
He is survived by a daughter, Cindy and her husband, Jim Imel; their sons, Matt (Danielle), Clint (Cheryl), and Wes (Kimberly); and a son, Craig, and his wife, Diane; their three sons, Jeff Montgomery (Ginger), Mark Montgomery (Catina), and Brad Montgomery (Misty); six great grandchildren and eight step great grandchildren.
