Janice Jo Schlageck, 76, Grinnell, died Sunday, August 4, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born May 19, 1937 in Monument to Carl and Lucille (Lunsford) Close. She attended Monument Schools graduating in 1955 and was an outstanding volleyball player who was given the nickname “Killer Close”. Janice Jo married Gale Schlageck on January 19, 1957 in Grinnell. She worked at Stapleton Airport in Denver, CO and was a secretary for USD #291 Grinnell for 37 years, retiring in 2008. Janice was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Altar Society and the Cow Paddy Golf Course, all of Grinnell. Janice Jo was a loving wife and mother and enjoyed outdoor activities with a passion for music, dancing and caring for her family. Her positive outlook on life and great sense of humor were an inspiration to her family and friends.


She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Dalen Schlageck.

Janice is survived by her husband, Gale, Grinnell; daughter, Kristeen (Jim) Fellhoelter, Oakley, and children, Rebecca Fellhoelter and friend, Darrin Bell, Colby, Jeff (Amy) Fellhoelter, Oakley, Amanda Remington, Park, and Jason Fellhoelter, Oakley; daughter, Karla (Jan) Pruitt, Hutchinson and sons, Jordan Pruitt, Hutchinson, and Jaron Pruitt, Manhattan; one son Peter (Kimberly) Schlageck, Colby, and sons, Cody (Layla) Schlageck, Colby, Devon Schlageck of MO and daughter, Karen (Bret) Jacobs, Hutchison; 7 great-grandchildren, Michael and Ranee Fellhoelter, Dalton and Shaylee Bell, Ashlynn and Eisley Remington and Huntly Schlageck.


Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today, Wednesday, August 7at Immaculate Conception Parish Center, Grinnell. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Grinnell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Janice Jo Schlageck, 76, of Grinnell passed away Sunday, August 4, 2013 at her home. She was born May 19, 1937 to Carl and Lucille (Lunsford) Close in Monument, KS. She married Gale Schlageck on Jan 19, 1957. She worked for the United School District 291 as a secretary for 37 years. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Altar Society and the Cow Patty Golf Course.

She is preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Dalen Schageck.

She is survived by her husband, Gale (Grinnell); three daughters, Kristeen (Jim) Fellhoelter (Oakley), Karla (Jan) Pruitt (Hutchinson) and Karen (Bret) Jacobs (Hutchinson); one son, Peter (Kimberly) Schlageck (Colby); elven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5-8:00pm on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Parish Center, Grinnell. Vigil service will be at 7:00pm. Funeral mass will be 10:30am on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Grinnell. Burial will follow in church cemetery.
