Irven Wesley Hayden Jr, 94, died Thursday, September 10, 2015 at his home in Atwood. Irv was born May 13, 1921 to Ruth (Hopkins) and Irven W. Hayden Sr. in Edgerton, Missouri. He graduated from Atwood High School in 1939 and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Kansas in 1947. On March 28, 1943, he married Ruth Irene Kelley at the Atwood Methodist Church. Irv and Ruth were blessed with seven children and 72 years of marriage.
Irv served in the U. S. Army in the China-India-Burma Theater in World War II, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He taught and coached all sports at Logan High School, in Logan, from 1947-1949. He and Ruth then returned to Atwood, where he operated Hayden’s Men’s Shop before joining his brother-in-law, R.O. Frick, in farming, in 1952. He also served as Atwood City Judge, Rawlins County Commissioner and Atwood City Councilman. For 25 years, he was the Voice of the Buffaloes.
Irv was a member of the Atwood United Methodist Church, the American Legion, Rotary International, the Masonic Lodge and K Club.
He is preceded in death by his parents, son Thorne Hayden, granddaughter Belle Hayden and son-in-law Mike Dennison.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; six children, Mike (Patti) Hayden, of Lawrence, Kelley (Marta Heffner) Hayden, of Reno, NV, Tom (Carol) Hayden, of Atwood, Katy (Bob Tricks) Hayden, of Ellis, Sally Hayden, of Lawrence, Paul (Tara) Hayden, of Atwood; four grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 3-5:00pm, on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral services will be 11:00am, September 14, 2015 at the Atwood United Methodist Church.
