Gordon Neal Crowdis, 79, of Atwood, passed away May 17, 2018, after a massive stroke, at Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita, KS. Gordon was born December 19, 1938 in Thomas, Oklahoma to Leo and Faye Crowdis. He was a member of a State Championship High School Football Team and graduated from Thomas high school in 1957. He attended Pratt Junior College from 1957-59 on a football scholarship and continued his education at Northwestern in Alva, Oklahoma, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in 1961. He accepted a position teaching science in Atwood, KS from 1961-67. In 1963 he met and married Shirley Worthy and they were married 54 years until her passing. They were life-long members of the First Christian Church of Atwood. In December 1969, a son Tom was born. Daughter, Sara was born in March 1976.
In the 70’s and 80’s he ran a fertilizer/feed business, had a local water well business and a farming operation. He loved baby pigs, bottle calves and every child he met. In the late 80’s he returned to teaching and enjoyed coaching football, basketball and wrestling. He was involved in local community organizations and a proud member of the Gideons. In his retirement years he looked after cattle in the summer and worked with his neighbors. He enjoyed the fellowship of the men’s group at the lake, all community events, friends and neighbors, and the people he was around, no matter where that was.
He is survived by his son Tom (Paula) Crowdis, Coats, KS and daughter Sara (Francisco) Rodriguez, Andover, KS; four grandchildren, Grace 16, Jay 16, Lane 13 and Joaquin 11; brothers, Larry (Pat) Crowdis, Lady Lake, FL, Lee (Jo) Crowdis, Thomas, OK and Bill (Becky) Crowdis, Duncan, OK; sister-in-law Bessie Jean Mannoni, Topeka, KS; brother-in-law Gary Worthy, Atwood, KS and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley; parents, Leo and Faye, and brother CL (Mary).
Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 PM, Friday May 25 at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the First Christian Church, Atwood, KS with burial following at Fairview Cemetery, Atwood. In Lieu of flowers the family has chosen two memorials – Dr. Kelly Crowdis, Gordon’s niece in Haiti who is a missionary/veterinarian and Gordon Crowdis Scholarship Fund for Rawlins County Schools.
