George Mckee

George Moffitt McKee Jr., 88 of Wichita, died Jan 5 2013. He was born on March 27, 1924 to George Moffitt Sr. and Iva N. (Santrock) Mckee in Valparaiso, Neb. He graduated from Colby High School in 1942. He attended Kansas State University and Bowling Green University, Ohio, before serving in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. Following his service time, he married Mary Lee Taylor in 1945 and then completed his degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Michigan in 1947. George began his successful career as a consulting engineer for Sherman County. He then began George M. McKee Consulting Engineers where he worked on the Kansas Turnpike, Many Highways, Bridges and sewer systems in Kansas from 1952-1972. In 1972, he began working for Contact Surety and Consultants serving as senior vice president in Wichita as the company’s engineer in the completion of Union Station in Washington, DC; bridges on I-95 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Hayward California interstate interchanges; along with many other projects across the U.S. He was a 32nd degree Mason of St. Thomas Lodge AFAM for 67 years, member of the Scottish Rite and member of ISIS, both of Salina. He is a life member of the KSU Alumni Assoc. and President’s Club. On Oct. 27, 2012, he was honored as “Fan of the Game” at KSU after attending football games for 70 years. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers. He attended West Heights United Methodist Church, Wichita. He was an avid fan of sports, especially football and track.

Preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary Lee McKee of 64 Years; a brother, Craig McKee and a grandson Michael Barrett McKee.

Survived by his sons, Michael C. (Judy) McKee, Fitchburg, WI and Thomas L. (Joan) McKee, Independence, MO; daughters, M. Kathleen Raymond, Andover, M. Coleen (John) Dougherty, Colby, Charlotte A. (Don) Steffens, Andover; 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8th, 2013 at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan 9, 2013 at the Colby United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Beulah Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Thomas County Historical Society and the Colby United Methodist Church in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67701.
