Fred Sheesley, 93, of Grinnell, passed away Monday, March 5th 2012 at Gove County Long Term Care. He was born November 5th, 1918 in Bennett, Colorado to Clarence Sheesley and Martha Mack. After growing up in eastern Colorado, he moved with his family to Grinnell, Kansas where he lived the rest of his life. He married Fern Eaton on January 6th, 1942 in Hoxie, Kansas. She preceded him in death on February 1st 1977. He was drafted into the United States Army on April 1st 1942. He would go on to serve in the Pacific Theater of Operations in WWII until wounded on the island of Luzon in early 1945. He was Honorably Discharged with a Purple Heart and returned home to Grinnell. After returning to Grinnell, he was employed with the Grinnell school system until he retired in 1967. He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, Boy Scouts of America, VFW Post 2864, and the Masonic Lodge. Fred enjoyed gardening, KU athletics, and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Fern; parents; daughter, Jan Sheesley; two brothers, Ray and Jimmy and three sisters, Patricia, Myrtle (Mert), Edith (Goog)
Survivors include a son, Fred (Freddy) Sheesley, Hays, Kansas; a daughter, Roxann Sheesley Nelson and husband Robert, Grinnell, Kansas; Four grandchildren, Scott Sheesley and Tonia, Grain Valley, MO; Elodie Sheesley Jones and Paul, Hays, KS; Chelsie Nelson, Hays, KS; Allen Nelson and Leslie, Lawrence, KS.; six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 – 8pm, Thursday, March 8, 2012 at Grinnell United Methodist Church, Grinnell. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2012 at Grinnell United Methodist Church.
