Floyd Trail

Floyd E. Trail, 84, of Atwood, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society-Atwood. He was born Dec. 22, 1933, in the Chardon Township, KS to Wesley and Elizabeth (Burnside) Trail. He entered the US Army in 1953 and served his country at Fort Bliss, TX earning an Honorable discharge in 1955 from active duty followed by 8 years in the Army Reserve. Floyd married Betty E. (Samson) Trail on June 12, 1961. He was a loving and devoted husband to Betty, caring for her was his priority. After Floyd’s retirement, the couple spent time traveling together in their camper. Frequent trips to Iowa to spend time with their son Doug, his wife Kathy, and their grandchildren Stephanie, Samantha, and Sarah were his favorite journeys. Another memorable trip was to Alaska with Floyd’s brother-in-law Joe and wife Jill.

Floyd was a devout Christian and very active in his church, where he enjoyed singing in the church choir, served as an Elder, and he held many positions within the church over the years. For many years he enjoyed being a part of the Western Kansas Men’s Barbershop Chorus and even dragged his wife to several of the performances. He was also a member of the Atwood Masonic Lodge recently receiving his 60-year pin.

He was very active with the Atwood Senior Citizens Center, including serving on the Board, and he enjoyed playing cards at the Good Samaritan Center. He delivered meals for many years and looked forward to visiting with everyone he met. He always liked to discuss farming, the weather, or just about anything with anyone at any time; he loved to regale stories and jokes to anyone that would listen (and even those that didn’t). He never knew a stranger and would lend a hand to anyone that needed it.

Floyd loved spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters and his great-grandson. His quirky sense of humor caused many an eye roll from his granddaughters over the years.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Merle, Gene, Bernard, Elmer, Fay, and Darrell Trail, and sister, Betty Brown.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Atwood; son, Doug (Kathy) Trail, Johnston, IA; brother, Ray (Rosa), Atwood; sisters, Verlaine (Leo) Hirsch, New Orleans, LA and LaVon Schlittenhardt, St. Francis, KS; sisters-in-law, Ellen Trail, Oklahoma City, OK, Faye Trail, Albert Lea, MN, and Sandy Nichols, Hilltop Lakes, TX; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Troy) Cheek, Samantha (Grant) Eckard, all of New Virginia, IA and Sarah Trail, Johnston, IA; one great-grandchild, Troy James Cheek and numerous nieces and nephews.
