Florence Marie Jane (Kantor) Horinek, 87, of Colby, passed away Monday, December 5, 2016, at Fairview Estates, in Colby. She was born March 24, 1929, in Loma, NE; the only daughter of Matthew and Agnes (Kacirek) Kantor.
Florence attended elementary school in Atwood and graduated high school from Notre Dame School for Girls in Omaha, NE. She received her teachers’ certificate from Greeley, CO. She also received a degree in Nutrition Education from Fort Hays College, in Hays, KS. When she was 56 years of age, she went back to college at Colby Community College, to earn a nursing degree as an LPN.
On August 12, 1948, she was united in marriage to Edward Horinek at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Atwood. During their married life, they lived in Atwood, McDonald, rural Winona and Page City. After her loving husband’s death on January 8, 2002; she moved to Colby to be closer to her church, the doctor and other facilities.
Florence was a devoted wife and mother. She also worked as a cook in a local café, an aide at the nursing home in Oakley, head cook at Triplains School, in Winona and as an LPN at Lantern Park Manor, in Colby. She and Ed also served as volunteers with the Winona Ambulance when Florence was active as an EMT. After moving to Colby, Florence was a part time cook at Fairview Estates.
She belonged to the VFW Auxiliary, the Sunshine Club, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Colby, Queen Mary Altar Society Circle, Daughters of Isabella, Handmaidens Prayer Group, was a weekly adorer on Thursdays for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and shared her time being involved in many church activities. In earlier years she also taught children in the CCD program.
She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband Edward; brothers, Melvin and Dan Kantor; grandson Jeffery and great grandson Samuel.
Members of her legacy of life include son Gary and wife Mary, of Kidder, MO; daughters, Robbi Kraus and husband Bob, of Wray, CO, Shelley Brock and husband Bob, of Monument, KS and Nancy Horning and husband Stan, of Gaylord, KS; son Tony and wife Anita, of Colby; 15 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and the expectant arrival of her first great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her brother, Ted Kantor and wife Vicky, of Gilman City, MO and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be 4-7:00 Friday, December 9, 2016 at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby, with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
