Elmo “Shorty” Duane Hawkins, 84, of Mc Donald, Kansas died Saturday May 16, 2015 at Cheyenne County Hospital in St. Francis. He was born to Elmo William Hawkins and Nellie (Reager) Hawkins on September 19, 1930 in Atwood Kansas. He married his wife of sixty years, Reta Cody on July 24, 1954 and they were blessed with three children.
Elmo served in the U.S. Air Force and was a former member of the American Legion. He had a love for Blue Grass and Gospel Music; he particularly relished Bill Monroe and Hank Williams. He liked to pass the time playing his guitar and riding his Harley. Shorty had a diverse working life. He ran a service station for a few years in the early 1970’s. He loved working as a mechanic and built stock cars for the races as well as a few special projects of his own. Elmo also spent a stretch as a truck driver and he liked it so much he convinced his wife Reta to join him on the road leading to many adventures together. He was a farmer who always loved having dogs in his life. He really cherished his four legged friend “Pooch” who came to visit him in the hospital in his final days.
Elmo is survived by his wife Reta, his children Cheryl Weishapl, Robert Hawkins, and Sandra Lee as well as his grandchildren Johnathan Hawkins, Alexis Weishapl, Rex Weishapl, and one great grandchild Chase Hawkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William Newell Hawkins, his sister Wilma Jean Hawkins and grandchildren Michelle Hawkins, Jesse Hawkins, and Bradly Scott Hawkins.
A visitation will be held Tuesday May 19, 2015 at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood from 5p.m.-7p.m. Funeral Services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Wednesday May 20, 2015 at Baalmann Mortuary Atwood with burial to follow in Grace Cemetery, McDonald Kansas.
