Edwin “Speed” Sander was born April 8, 1928 in Victoria, KS. Speed was the first boy born of Severin A. Sander and Brigette L. Graf. He had five older sisters, Severina Engel, Edna Erwin, Alberta Lile, Lucille Sander and Alice Schoenberger. He had four younger brothers, Melvin, Alvin, Marvin, and Ronald Sander. The family lived outside of Gove, Kansas growing up, then moved to Monument, Kansas. Speed graduated from Monument High School in 1947. He married Dorothy Marie Stwalley on October 27, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Oakley, Kansas.
They moved to Denver, where as a young man, he washed windows on skyscrapers.
Richard Lee was born January 21, 1949. Robert Alan was born March 21, 1950. Linda Susan was born June 8, 1951. Shortly thereafter, Speed and Dorothy moved back to Oakley. Speed opened his own auto repair shop.
In 1956 they moved to Wheatridge, Colorado and bought their first home. Speed worked for Weaver-Beatty Motor Company. They enjoyed visiting Speed’s siblings around the Denver area.
Dorothy and Speed were members of the Unclub Car Club in Denver and participated in many car shows in Kansas and Colorado.
In 1993 Speed and Dorothy moved to Oakley once again. They thoroughly enjoyed being members of the Oakley Dance Club. Speed built street rods and displayed them around the area at car shows and parades.
Speed leaves behind to mourn his passing his three children, Richard Sander, Robert and Kathy Sander and Linda and Gary Kentch; five grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren: Sean and Alison Kentch and Madison and Logan; Robert and Brandy Kentch and Faith, Bridget, and Garrett; Susan and Gavin James and Colin, Sydney and Preston, and Alex; Dustin and Maggie Sander and Elke and Beatrice; Brandon and Sara Sander and Major and Duke. He is survived by his brother and sister in law Marvin and Erma Sander and a host of nieces and nephews.
Speed’s memory lives on thru friends and family. He will be buried at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
