Edith Elnora Ehrlich Carr, 91, longtime Oakley resident, died November 9, 2013, in Spokane, WA. She was born September 30, 1922 to Henry and Susie Ehrlich at their home in Oakley, KS. She joined her older brother Egon and later welcomed younger sister, Charlotte. She attended school in Oakley and graduated from Oakley high School in 1940 as a member of the Honor Society. Edith’s school years were filled with choral music and she was proud to be the drum majorette for the high school band. While in high school Edith took post graduate business courses. Following graduation, in 1941, she secured her first secretarial position for the Jenson and Spencer Law Offices. On January 10, 1943 Edith married Paul Carr, an Oakley native, in her parent’s home. Paul was home on leave from the United States Army. In 1945 she left the secretarial position to stay home and care for Charla Jane (Janie) and then Roger Jay. She continued to work part-time for the firm during tax time. As Janie and Roger grew, Edith went back to work first in the A.S.C.A. office and then at Crownover Insurance Agency from 1963-1990, when she retired, but continued working part-time for several years. In her retirement, she delivered Meals on Wheels. Edith was active in the Oakley Methodist Church, where she was baptized as an infant and later became a member. Edith was always dedicated to her church and church family. She is fondly remembered teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and was active in the Epworth League Youth Group. Her love of music continued as she sang with the choir until 1996. She served on various church committees and commissions and was a member of the United Methodist women and the Night Circle. She was very involved with the activities of the church’s mission project, The Second Time Around Shop. Edith was an active participant in the Oakley Order of Eastern Star and received her 50 year pin. She and Paul served as presiding officers for six different years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Afternoon Club and earlier in the Sew and So Club. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and crossword puzzles. In November of 2006, Edith moved to Spokane, WA to live with Sam and Janie.
