Dorothy Jean Okeson, 83 was born August 31, 1931 at Garden City, KS to Arthur E. Newman and Thelma Lucille (McGraw) Newman and died February 4, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society, Atwood, KS.
She graduated High School in 1949 from Grand Junction CO. She graduated from the University of Colorado State College at Greeley, CO, in 1961.
Over the years Dorothy worked as a nanny, waitress, typewriter repairman, strung badminton and tennis racquets, worked for room and board at college as well as at J.C. Penney’s on her way to becoming a Junior High and secondary social studies teacher. She taught driver’s Ed and high school girls’ basketball and P.E. classes and others. Dorothy married Arnold Okeson on December 21, 1952 at the Bethany Lutheran Church located in the Stockholm Community south of Weskan. To this union a son, Michael was born.
She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Weskan, served as Elder, Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, and various committees. Present member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Atwood prayer partner group. AAAUW-life member since 1961.
She was a life member of N.E.A. A founding member of Sherman Wallace ARC, and was appointed by Governor Bennett to the Governors planning council on D.D. She was recognized in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Education; DSNWK award upon retirement; plaque and letter from Susanne Woods, chairman of KS, DDC; life time achievement award from Kansas State Special Olympics Organization at Hays. She was nominated Rawlins County/Atwood residents for KS, most valuable volunteer award presented by Gov. Sebelius.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Arnold Sept 6, 2006.
Dorothy is survived by a son Michael LeRoy of Atwood and a very close family friend and guardian of Michael, Caroline (Unruh) Grantz and her husband Alvin of Garden City and numerous other relatives and Friends.
Visitation is 2-4:00 p.m. Monday, February 9, 2015 at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Atwood. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. CST in Stockholm Cemetery, Wallace County, KS.
