Doris Y. Hayward, 95, of Colby, died Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Citizens Medical Center, Colby, KS. She was born Jan 19, 1919 to Charles M. and Susie (Everiss) Yeo in Rawlins County, KS. She began her education at Ilion School in rural Rawlins County. She moved to Colby with her mother and brother in 1932 where she attended Colby High School and graduated in 1937. After high school she worked for Service Oil and then for Symns-Schafer Mercantile for 18 years until the company liquidated. She managed her own farm operation until retirement in 2014. She married Forrest F. Hamilton in 1937. She married Gail E. Hayward in 1953. She enjoyed dancing and was a skilled seamstress, sewing many special items for her family.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1921, her mother in 1960, her brother Fred E. Yeo in 1994, her great-grandson Cyler Berry in 1986, and her son-in-law Charles "Bud" Ward in 1996.
She is survived by two daughters, Naomi Ward, Sandra Harper, and son-in-law David Harper all of Colby; five grandchildren, Deanna (Milan) Berry, Garden City; Jeff (Kris) Harper, Winona; Nolind Ward, Russell Springs; Charlotte Baalman, Oakley; and Amy (Dan) Jennings, Colby; 100 year old double cousin Mary Harper Brown, Cheyenne, WY; fourteen great grandchildren, and ten great-great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Monday, January 5, 2015 at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Visitation will be from 9:00am until service time on Monday. Burial will follow in the Ilion Cemetery, Rawlins County. Memorials are suggested to the Prairie Museum of Art & History in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS.
