She was born June 18th, 1928 on the family farm, nine miles west of St. Francis, KS, to Helen (Wolbach) and Leonard Miller. She had three siblings, Melvin, Barbara and Peggy. On the farm, all the children were expected to do daily chores. Doris rose early to milk the cows so that she didn’t have to do it later, when the day and the cows were a lot hotter. She attended East Gurney country school until the eighth grade and then went to high school in St Francis, graduating in 1946. After high school, Doris worked in St. Francis at the Clark Drug Store for several years and then for seven years as a bank clerk at the Citizens State Bank. In 1959, her life changed forever when she met Lee Amsberry, from Bird City, one night at the Vets club in St. Francis. Doris and Lee were married on January 12, 1960 in a small ceremony officiated by the Methodist minister in Goodland, KS. They were joined at the ceremony by Richard and Darlene Brubaker and took up residence in Bird City. In 1962, their only child, Kent, was born. Doris stopped working at the bank to devote herself to the full time job of being a wife and mother. In 1967, Doris re-entered the work force and worked as a bank clerk at the Security State Bank in Bird City for 17 years. In retirement, she was very active with the Bird City Senior Center and was president for many years. She was a member of the Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary. Doris enjoyed gardening, reading and bowling. She was a member of the Security State Bank bowling team, which won many league championships over the years. Doris and Lee also acted as grandparents for the children of their niece Ronda Miller. They loved being grandparents and got much joy from their four grandchildren.
