Donald Phelps

Donald Eugene Phelps, 91, of Atwood, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018, at the Rawlins County Health Center, in Atwood, KS. He was the son of David J. and Alta (Scarrow) Phelps, born on May 23, 1926 in Winona, KS. He was the second of four children. When he was two years old his family moved to Beardsley, KS. He attended Beardsley grade school and then graduated from Atwood High School in 1943. Donald served in WWII in the United States Navy from August 10, 1944 until he was discharged on June 10, 1946. On June 3, 1948, he married Maxine Fikan in Atwood, and to this union three children were born Gary, Brent, and Donna. Don was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed working outdoors, flying, hunting, trapping, fishing, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents David and Alta Phelps; sister, Helen Higgins, brothers, David J. Phelps Jr. and Norval Phelps; and son-in-law, Doug Finley.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine; children, Gary Phelps of Las Vegas, NV, Brent (Donna) Phelps of Houston, TX, and Donna Finley of Colby, KS; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2018 at the Atwood United Methodist Church with inurnment to follow in the Fairview Cemetery.
