Delmar “Sonny” Weinhardt, 78, of Grinnell, died October 31, 2013 at Gove County Medical Center. He was born December 2, 1934 to Harvey and Madeline Weinhardt. He married Joan Mense on April 28, 1959 and became an active member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Grinnell. They had two sons. Sonny enjoyed living childhood and most of his adult life in the Grinnell community. There are those that equal, but no one loved Grinnell like Sonny Weinhardt. When the town needed a mayor, fire chief, Pride committee member or volunteer Sonny answered the call. Sonny and his father owned and operated Weinhardt and Son Oil in Grinnell. He then worked for the USD 291 school district for over 30 years until his retirement. Sonny also had a passion for his other job, umpiring and officiating sports across Kansas. Upon his retirement he was honored on the floor of the Kansas House and Senate in Topeka for his service of over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother Elsie Weinhardt.
He is survived by his wife Joan; sons Mark Weinhardt, Grinnell and Chuck (Ann) Weinhardt, Lenexa and grandson Henry, Lenexa.
