Debra Susan Unger

Debra “Debbie” Susan Unger was born on June 21, 1973, in McCook, Nebraska, the youngest of five children born to Joseph D and Nadine (Riener) Green. Debbie passed away on March 25, 2025, at her home. Debbie was surrounded by her husband Dave, mother Nadine, brother Dave, sister Jeanne and her fur babies.

Debbie grew up on the family farm north of Herndon, with her four siblings, Connie, Dave, Jeanne, and Patti. Debbie attended school in Herndon, graduating in 1991. After graduation, Debbie attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney, graduating in December 1995 Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. In May 1991, Debbie met her husband, Dave Unger. Debbie and Dave were married on June 11, 1994. They were deeply in love and inseparable. If you saw one you were looking for the other. Debbie and Dave made their home in Kearney, Nebraska while they both attended college. When Dave graduated in May 1996 they made the move to Jefferson County, Kansas to be close to Debbie’s sister, Patti Chartier (Bob). Debbie worked as a staff accountant for SSC Advisors, Inc. Debbie loved her job and the clients she had. Debbie considered so many of her clients as family. Debbie’s work ethic was unmatched. In 2014 Dave’s career offered the opportunity to move back to northwest Kansas. Debbie and Dave moved to Colby, KS where they made their home for six years before getting the opportunity to move back to Herndon in 2020 and live less than a quarter mile from where Debbie grew up. Debbie continued to work for SSC Advisors, Inc. remotely.

On November 13, 2015, Debbie found out she had metastatic breast cancer. Debbie took on the challenge to fight cancer with intensity. Debbie took on her treatments with a smile on her face and was always in a good mood no matter how bad she felt. Debbie met several wonderful people along her journey with cancer treatment.

Debbie and Dave began to build a herd of cattle after moving back to northwest Kansas. Debbie loved being outside and loved having cattle. She had her favorites that she often fed cubes to and told Dave those cows were never leaving. Debbie had a love for animals. She had several house cats over the years and finally became a dog person after Dave brought home her first chihuahua. She ended up having two chihuahua’s, Tito and Rusty. They were her world. They went to work with her every morning and gave her moral support while they slept, and she worked. They followed her around the house as closely as her own shadow. They were what brought peace to Debbie when she passed away.

Debbie was preceded in death by her father Joseph D. Green.

Debbie is survived by her husband Dave, mother Nadine, sister Connie (Jerry) Reitcheck of Conway Springs, brother Dave Green of Herndon, sister Jeanne (Marty Ruda) of Colby, and sister Patti (Bob) Chartier of Ozawkie along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews whom she loved so dearly.
