Curtis Berry

Curtis Bryan Berry, 86, died Friday October 23, 2015 at the Citizens Medical Center in Colby, KS. He was born April 6, 1929 in Brewster, KS to Levi Amos Berry and Clarice Amanda (Dillinger) Berry. He married Lea Loraine Bowen the 18th day of September 1949 in Goodland, KS. They had five children; Gordon, Glenda, Clayton, Collette, and Shirley. After completing his Sophomore year of high school, he went to work in the potato fields around Monte Vista, CO. The family moved to Brewster in 1945 and Curtis followed shortly thereafter. He worked for Joe Roy, who was a farmer, until the time he went into the service in 1946 and 1948. He was recalled in 1950 during the Korean War. While he served in the Army he was a cook. Soon after his discharge, he started working for Marshall Farms and worked for them until he retired. After he retired from Marshall Farms, he helped a couple of other farmers on and off, but worked for LaVelle Palmgren the majority of the time up until his death. Even when he went into the hospital he still worried about not being able to help get the fall crops in. During his lifetime he was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the Elks. In the summer of 2015 he was awarded a long time service award from the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lea Loraine, and son Clayton; his parents, Levi (Hack) and Clarice Berry, and his brother Clarence Berry. Survivors include son, Gordon Berry, of Brewster; daughters Glenda (Steve) Thummel of Salina, Collette Carpenter, of Brewster, and Shirley (Randy) Raile, of Goodland; brother, Leslie (Barbara) Berry, of Lafayette, CO; sisters, Zelma Kinkade (Leonard) Kinkade, and Donna (Don) Farley, both of Brewster; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials to Curtis B. Berry Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral chapel.
