Cloyce Hand

Cloyce Ellis Hand (92) of Atwood was born to Roy Albert Hand and Edna Maude Wheatley in Claudell, KS on October 4, 1921 and died September 17, 2014 in the Rawlins County Hospital.

Cloyce grew up in Smith County and graduated from Kensington High School in 1940. He joined the CCCs (Civilian Conservation Corps) from 1940 to 1942. He served at Camp Paul, Idaho, and transferred to Camp Chilly in Mackay, Idaho, where his brother Lorand was stationed. Cloyce was a Company Clerk. He traveled around with the CCCs to various camps.

When the war broke out on December 7, 1941, Cloyce moved back to Smith County and joined the Navy. He served as a Gunner’s Mate Second Class (E-6). He was discharged in 1948.

When he returned home from the war, he met and married Rose Marie Simoneau on June 25, 1950 in Stockton, Ks. From this union they were blessed with 6 children.

Cloyce was a member of the Atwood American Legion, The Knights of Columbus, The Sacred Heart Church and the VFW of Herndon, KS. He was a proud Veteran of the US Navy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Lorand B Hand, sisters Madeline and Lorena.

He is survived by his wife Rose, children: Steve (Kathy) Hand, Steven’s Point, WI, Patti(Gerald)Davis, Aurora, CO, Janeen(Chuck)Masters, Andover, KS, Natalie(Darrell)Mickey, McCook, NE, Bill(Dee)Hand, Hays, KS and Jerald Hand, Wichita, KS. 9 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Visitation will be Sunday September 21, 2014 from 4-7 with Rosary at 7pm at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, September 22, 2014 at 10am at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood, KS. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery with Military Rites. Memorials may be made to the American Legion or the Altar Society at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in care of Baalmann Mortuary, 109 N 2nd St, Atwood, KS 67730.
