Catherine Theresa Stehno, 88, of Atwood, died Monday, January 27, 2025. She was born January 15, 1937, in Atwood, KS to August (Gus) and Rose Stehno. She attended Atwood Grade and High Schools graduating Atwood Community High School in 1955. She attended McCook Junior College in Nebraska and later graduated from Marymount College in Salina, KS with a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1961.
After graduation, Catherine taught Grade School in Ellis and Victoria, KS for several years. She then moved to New Orleans, LA and worked for Humble Oil. Returning to the Midwest, Catherine settled in the Kansas City, MO area and made it her permanent home.
She worked for the State of Missouri in several capacities including Employment Counseling, Job Placement, Unemployment Claims and finally as Supervisor of the Computer Lab. While working for the State of Missouri, Catherine continued her Post Graduate Education with courses in Counseling, Psychology and Statistics at Rockhurst College, Central Missouri State College and the University of Missouri; all in Kansas City, MO. She retired in 2002 after 32 years of service.
Catherine loved Music and especially singing. She sang in the Sacred Heart Church Choir in Atwood while growing up and later at Marymount College where she was a Choir member. Her favorite sport was watching football games with the Kansas City Chiefs. Catherine loved humor and regularly shared jokes she found with family and friends. She especially enjoyed family trips for vacations in the Colorado Rockies, reunions, weddings and other get-to-gethers.
Catherine was a devout Catholic and was a member of Our Lady of the Presentation Parish in Lee’s Summit, MO. She had a special devotion to St. Padre Pio.
Catherine’s Mother and Father predeceased her as well as sisters, Marilyn Ince and Elaine Martin, and brothers, Eugene and Gerald. She leaves brother Larry of Plano, TX and many nieces. nephews and relatives in California, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas as survivors.
Visitation is 5-6:30 p.m. with a Vigil at 6:30 p.m., Monday, February 3, 2025, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood, with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atwood.
