Betty Jo Carney, 83, of Colby, died December 18, 2014 at Citizen’s Medical Center. She was born to Columbus and Pearl (Nichols) Ramsey on May 24, 1931 in Edson, Kansas. She married James Carney on September 21, 1946 and from this union of 64 years, eight children were born. She was a member of the #514 Morning Star Rebekah Lodge, Ladies Encampment Auxiliary (LEA), and Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant branch of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows (LAPM), VFW Ladies Auxiliary, 4-H Extension Council, Mid-Century Garden Club, the First Christian Church and was a 4-H leader for more than 30 years. Betty enjoyed quilting with the church ladies, doing water aerobics, cooking at Colby Jr. High School, and spending time with her great-grandkids. She loved having family and friends visit- anyone at her house was fed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; sons, John and Robert ‘Bob’; brother, Yancy Ramsey; granddaughter, Mary Jo Gensil and great-grandson, Seth Carney.
She is survived by her children: Linda (Gerald) Thiele of Champaign, IL, Howard (LeAnne) Carney of Brewster, KS, Patty Jo Gensil of Colby, KS, Ruth (Johnny) Hennly of Kingsland, AR, Ross (Cathy) Carney of Colby, KS, Tom (Lisa) Carney, Sylvan Grove of KS, step sister, Phyllis (Bryant) Whittaker of Carbondale, KS, twenty grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the First Christian Church in Colby.
